In his letter on an editorial about Canada's Pierre Trudeau (Oct. 13), James Connolly writes that, in his view, Americans are ``haunted'' by the ``vision'' that they, or their children, ``could one day be wealthy.''
What's the goal of American life? Happiness? Fulfillment? Love? Service of others? A good education? No! It's to be wealthy one day, to have it all. It's to have at least one cell phone, a mighty big house, a computer with e-mail and the Internet, two vehicles (one of which must be an SUV), a good (-paying) job and the kids going to college to ``get an education'' (to qualify for that good-paying job). …
