FED: Nine network crew to be deported from East Timor
A television crew from the Nine Network would be deported from East Timor later today after
police found they had entered the territory on tourist -- not journalist -- visas.
Indonesian police yesterday detained the 60 Minutes program team headed by reporter RICHARD
CARLETON and including producer MARK LLEWELLYN, a Nine sound technician, cameraman, and an
Indonesian journalist who was working with them.
Unconfirmed reports say the team angered pro-Indonesia militia men when they were
questioning people who were waiting to vote in a polling station in Liquica, a town about 30km
to the west of Dili.
Nine reporter ADRIAN BROWN says the team was taken to a police station where it was
discovered they had entered the country, on tourist visas as opposed to journalists visas.
Mr BROWN has told the Nine network that the 60 Minutes team are being kicked out of East
Timor on an immigration irregularity and will be deported later today.
