SSP, the Secret Squirrel Party; BLACK DOG IN HOLYROOD.(Column)

IS paranoia back in fashion in the Scottish Socialist Party?

The Young Socialists are so keen to keep their conference in Fife this weekend under wraps that they are refusing to tell the party's grownups where it is. Much to their annoyance.

Not that they are missing much. Hot topic at Camp Secret Squirrel, as it is called, is 'Knife Crime - Come and Get Chibbed At Camp Squirrel'. How charming.

MORE bad news for Frank McAveety, the MSP sacked twice from government posts. Frank's colleagues are so alarmed at his weight increase they plan to neuter him at this weekend's interparliamentary football tournament in Wales.

Super-striker Frank won't play up front, but is to be relegated to keeping goal.

This, of course, is all to do with weight and nothing to do with him being blamed for the MSPs losing last year's final.

THE potential for Chinese tourists spending tens of millions of pounds visiting Scotland now visa regulations have been relaxed wasn't enough to persuade Tourism Minister Patricia Ferguson to cut short her hols in sunny Sorrento and meet a high-powered delegation of Chinese politicians and journalists.

What will Wendy wow us with, we wonder

NOT long now until the publication of Wendy Alexander's book on her hero, the late First Minister Donald Dewar. Next month's Labour Party Conference will see the launch with the book introduced by her other hero, Gordon Brown.

Wendy, pictured, is not seen as one of life's songand-dance women, so few are expecting a racy page-turner.

NOT all MSPs are keen to hitch a ride on the Holyrood gravy train. Kate Maclean, Labour MSP for Dundee West, has made a stand after The Scottish Mail on Sunday exposed how our politicians are using public money to cash in on the property boom by buying second homes in Edinburgh. She and Scottish Socialist Tommy Sheridan want the profits from second homes handed over to the taxpayer.

The winds of change

IS the honeymoon over? Western Isles Nationalist MP Angus Brendan McNeil may have done a sterling job attacking the Executive since he was elected a few months ago, but it's not impressing his constituents.

Young McNeil, who has already been attacked publicly by one senior SNP figure, woke up this week to find no less than a former chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise weighing into him.

The cause of all this trouble? McNeil's 'shilly-shallying' and 'cloud cuckoo land' attitude over wind farms. Curiously, the very same subject that caused the demise of his predecessor.

THERE is life after politics for some ex-MSPs. Well, as long as your main customer is your old paymaster. Former minister Angus MacKay has picked up almost [pounds sterling]20,000 of public contracts since losing his South Edinburgh seat two years ago and setting up in the private sector.

Now it is revealed that one of event organiser MacKay Hannah Ltd's main sources of income is the Scottish Executive.
