NSW: Retirement village a longstanding crime victim
The operators of a New South Wales retirement village invaded by armed robbers yesterday,
says it has had a long history of vandalism and break-ins.
Three women were threatened by three armed men at the Lake Haven Masonic Village on
the central coast about 10 pm (AEDT).
The men gained access through an unlocked sliding door after climbing on to a balcony.
Police say the men, armed with a handgun, and stole one woman's handbag and threw eggs
around another's room.
Police say a third elderly woman was grabbed in a headlock, but scared the men off
with her screams for help.
The Royal Freemasons Benevolent Institution which runs the village, says it has a history
of vandalism and break-ins, but says the home invasion is a first.
State opposition police spokesman PETER DEBNAM says the attack highlights the problems
police have in combating gun crime.
