Fed: Labor raises pressure on government to freeze excise

CANBERRA, Jan 19 AAP - The federal opposition today raised its pressure on the government
to freeze next month's scheduled rise in fuel tax, but refused to commit itself to abolishing
the excise in government.

An interim report by a special Labor committee examining petrol prices called for an
immediate waiver on the February 1 rise, which is meant to accompany increases in inflation.

Committee chair Peter Cook said the opposition would back laws for a temporary freeze,
or, if the government refused, introduce its own bill.
